Global Citizenship
Aglobal citizen is an individual who cares passionately about others and the world in which they live. An active global citizen recognises their role and responsibilities as a member of a wider global community and takes action to support causes they believe in.
Global Citizenship is at the heart of ANS’ Guiding Statements because we believe this is essential for young people to gain the skills, knowledge and attributes to help contribute towards a fairer and protected world.
At ANS, Global Citizenship extends beyond fundraising. It is woven throughout the curriculum, providing students with opportunities to take a lead, be active and contribute to the lives of others. Our programme is designed to enable students to understand the wider world in which they live including their role within it. It also teaches students to respect and value diversity and generates a desire to tackle social injustice, leading to a more equitable world. The importance of a sustainable way of life is also highlighted. In the Secondary Phase, the Global Perspectives IGCSE and A-level programmes build upon the foundation skills laid down in the Primary and early Secondary phases.
Fostering Global Citizenship is priority 3 of the UN Secretary General’s ‘Global Education First Initiative’. The GEFI defines global citizenship thus:
‘The world faces global challenges which require global solutions. These interconnected global challenges call for far-reaching changes in how we think and act for the dignity of fellow human beings. It is not enough for education to produce individuals who can read, write and count. Education must be transformative and bring shared values to life. It must cultivate an active care for the world and those with whom we share it…’
In 2017 ANS formed a partnership with United World Schools which provided a wonderful opportunity for students to put their Global Citizenship skills into practice. Through our curriculum programme and a schedule of fundraising activities that are planned by our Charity Committee, students are directly impacting on the lives of others.
