In an increasingly interconnected world,
the ability to communicate across languages and cultures is an invaluable skill. At our school, we recognise the importance of equipping pupils with the linguistic confidence and global perspective required to thrive in the future.
As part of this commitment, Chinese is introduced as a third language from Year 1, enabling pupils to begin their language-learning journey at an early age.
Research consistently demonstrates that younger learners are particularly receptive to acquiring new languages. By introducing Mandarin Chinese in the primary years, pupils develop strong foundations in listening, speaking, reading and writing, whilst also gaining an appreciation of Chinese culture and traditions. Lessons are carefully structured to be engaging and age-appropriate, incorporating songs, stories, games and interactive activities that foster both confidence and curiosity.
Whilst classroom lessons provide a strong foundation, language acquisition is most effective when pupils are given regular opportunities to practise and apply their skills. For this reason, the school offers a range of After-School Chinese Language Programmes, designed to extend learning beyond the timetable and support pupils at different stages of proficiency.
These enrichment programmes allow pupils to further develop their communication skills in a supportive and immersive environment. Through additional language practice, cultural activities and collaborative projects, pupils are encouraged to use Chinese in meaningful contexts, strengthening both their linguistic ability and their cultural understanding. Whether a pupil is beginning their Mandarin journey or seeking to advance their existing knowledge, the after-school provision offers an excellent pathway for continued progress.
A distinctive feature of our Chinese language provision is that the school is also an HSK Testing Centre. The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is the internationally recognised standard for assessing Chinese language proficiency among non-native speakers. Having access to an authorised testing centre within the school provides pupils with a convenient and familiar setting in which to undertake these examinations.
The success of the programme is reflected in our pupils' performance in the HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) examinations. In 2025, 86% of candidates achieved HSK Level 1, 84% achieved HSK Level 2, and 50% achieved HSK Level 3, demonstrating steady progression across a range of proficiency levels. To support pupils in achieving their language-learning goals, the school organises HSK examinations at least twice each academic year, providing regular opportunities to assess progress and readiness for higher levels of study.
The HSK qualifications offer pupils an opportunity to benchmark their progress against international standards and gain formal recognition of their achievements. As pupils progress through the various levels, they build a portfolio of credentials that may support future educational opportunities, university applications and international study pathways.
Through a combination of high-quality classroom teaching, enriching after-school opportunities and access to internationally recognised qualifications, our Chinese language programme nurtures confident, globally minded learners who are prepared to engage with the wider world and its many opportunities.
